Events

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the prospect that the pandemic might finally be coming under control, public gatherings are expected to increase as the summer opens.  We anticipate an increase in community meetings and social events, though certain precautions, such as social distancing and mask-wearing, will continue to be observed in a number of places.  Here, we will mention several events in the local area of which we are made aware, specifically those that are of particular community interest.

“It Takes A Village” Community Meeting and Documentary, June 5, 2021, Arch Social Club, Baltimore, Maryland

Elder David Murphy is the Founder, Editor and Publisher of The National Black Unity News (TNUBN), a growing national publication that has brought together a variety of writers, activists and businesspeople from the Maryland/Washington, DC area in a cooperative effort to bring information to the people that many of the major news media neglect or conceal from us.

Elder Murphy has been involved in publishing for decades, having published a newspaper in Washington, DC as well as other ventures.  He is also one of the original Founders, with Bro. Bill Goodin, Bro. Renny Bass, Elder Michael Johnson and others, of Black Men Unifying Black Men (BMUBM), which had started with a simple goal: to encourage Black Men to gather once a month at a Black-owned venue for breakfast, talk to each other, get to know each other, build respect for each other, and then forge bonds that could not only prevent violence between them but also help to heal the wounds that still bring pain to the wider community.  While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the breakfasts to stop for over a year, the meetings will resume on Saturday, June 12 with the first in-person (socially-distanced) breakfast at Terra Cafe at 101 E. 25th Street in Baltimore.

From the BMUBM meetings, the decision to pursue TNBUN was made and the paper was launched, recruiting local activists, businesspeople and others to participate as writers, editors and investors.

TNUBN is published quarterly, with plans to increase the paper’s circulation and frequency as its message reaches more of the people.

The TNUBN June 5 Meeting and Documentary

On Saturday, June 5, Elder Murphy will sponsor an event at Baltimore’s Historic Arch Social Club (2426 Pennsylvania Avenue, at the corner of Pennsylvania and North Avenues in the heart of Baltimore’s Penn-North Community).  This is where the epicenter of the 2015 protests occurred after the death in police custody of Freddie Gray earlier that year.

Elder Murphy has invited a variety of community activists, those who have worked with him on TNUBN and those who have not, to briefly address the public about their community efforts.  The event will also be filmed to develop a documentary about those in the community who have toiled for years, often without reward, to make this world a better place.

Attendance at the event will be limited due to COVID-19-related precautions, and speakers are appearing by invitation.  Those who cannot attend the event in person will be able to follow David Murphy and TNUBN on Facebook, and a documentary will be produced from video taken at the event (see below).
